A Pilgrimage into the Heart of Japan

Japan is a land where centuries-old spiritual traditions and modern life exist side by side in a remarkable way. Among tranquil temples, sacred mountains, ancient pilgrimage paths, and vibrant cities, a world unfolds that invites us to slow down, become more present, and reconnect with what truly matters.

From 7 to 21 October 2026, Mahakasha invites you on an extraordinary pilgrimage through Japan, accompanied by Lharampa Tenzin Kalden.

Our journey takes us from Tokyo to significant temples, shrines, and sacred places, and onward through Japan’s diverse landscapes. Along the way, we encounter different Buddhist traditions, centuries of cultural heritage, and places that have been dedicated to meditation, contemplation, and inner reflection for generations.

This journey is more than a traditional tour. It is an invitation not simply to visit Japan, but to experience it consciously.

Shared spiritual practice and meditation accompany us throughout the journey, creating space for the outer experiences of the pilgrimage to resonate within. In this way, culture, spirituality, human connection, and personal experience become woven together.

A special journey for those who wish to discover Japan with open eyes, while at the same time embarking on a journey within.

A Journey Outward and Within

This special pilgrimage is accompanied by Lharampa Tenzin Kalden, who will guide the group throughout the journey with shared spiritual practice, meditation, and Buddhist reflections.

Our visits to Japan’s temples, shrines, and sacred places thereby take on an additional dimension. We encounter these places not simply as travellers, but consciously take time to pause, observe, and allow the experiences of the journey to resonate within us.

Whenever the daily schedule allows, we begin the morning with a shared 30- to 45-minute practice. These quiet moments give the pilgrimage an inner rhythm and accompany us through the many impressions and encounters of the days ahead.

In this way, the experience of Japan becomes intertwined with a personal inner journey, carried by mindfulness, contemplation, connection, and shared practice.

Highlights of Our Pilgrimage

Our pilgrimage takes us through different regions of Japan, bringing together significant Buddhist temples, revered shrines, historic places, and remarkable landscapes as part of one shared journey.

We begin in Tokyo, where centuries-old spiritual traditions meet the vibrant rhythm of a modern metropolis. With the historic Zōjō-ji Temple and the peaceful Nezu Shrine, the first gateways into Japan’s spiritual heritage open before us from the very beginning of our journey.

From there, our path leads us to further significant places, including Kamakura and its Great Buddha, historic temples and monasteries, and landscapes that have been connected with Japan’s religious and cultural history for centuries.

One of the special highlights of our pilgrimage is our visit to Eiheiji, one of Japan’s most important Zen monasteries. For centuries, this remarkable place has been dedicated to intensive practice and meditation and continues to embody the living tradition of Zen.

As our journey continues, we encounter the beauty and cultural depth of Kanazawa and travel onward through Japan until we eventually reach the northern part of the country.

Along the way, it is not only the landscape that changes. Each place opens a different perspective onto Japan’s spiritual traditions, history, and way of life.

Over the course of the journey, these individual experiences gradually become part of a continuous pilgrimage — from vibrant cities to tranquil temples, from outward discovery to inner reflection, and from individual encounters to a shared experience that may continue to resonate long after our return home.
